Bleach is already well monetized, it is just not on the scale of Naruto/Dragon Ball/One piece. Never was outside Japan, and even in Japan the following was never quite as loyal. Still a major property, but I don't expect it to reach those heights!
Same goes for Overlord (at a different tier!), even if my reaction to it is more or less "God, can they stop with the isekais already..."
This was a great article, I really appreciate the breadth here. As I am a huge fan of anime and manga it feels great to try and invest in quality companies making it. Your blog helps me a lot in that regard.
Learning the different components of anime economics production, studio, distributor, etc is something I would really like to know more about.
I would especially love to hear more about your opinion on Toho. There potential vertical integration, the acquisition of Science SARU which is now creating one of the hottest anime of the year. Do you really think their movie theatre chain weighs that heavily against them?
About Toho... I don't think Science SARU has a majority of the rights in Dandadan (by a lot) because it is unlikely they had the capacity to invest when the production decisions were taken. I find Toho's investment and participation in both JJK and Spy x Family a lot more relevant. That said, Science SARU is a fantastic studio and it is a nice step to have people of that quality in-house for future integration!
The theatrical business is doing well in the last couple of years, better than pre-COVID, and it is being well managed. But still, a difficult segment to keep.
Will try to publish a more in depth look at some point :)
Bleach fans. UNITE !
Sorry for the late read, thanks so much for the detailed write up. Much appreciated. I still believe BLEACH has potential for being monetarized...
Also, i could see a world where Overlord becomes popular.
